Officially called Federal democratic republic of Nepal, Nepal is a landlocked country located in Asia. Nepal is divided into 7 states, 75 districts and 744 local units including 4 metropolises, 13 sub-metropolises, 246 municipal councils and 481 villages with a total population of 26.4 million (wikipedia, 2017). Nepal shares border with India in east, west, south and in north with China. Though many people with many mother tongue live in Nepal, the official language is Nepali with kathmandu as a capital city.
Nepal being the habitat of many people with different belief, culture and tradition, it’s a perfect example of Unity in diversity. Nepal is full of natural beauties with Mountains in the North, river/rivulets in the mid and Jungle with various rare/endangered animals in the the South/Terai area. With so much beauties to watch, explore and have fun in, it is a great tourist attraction but Nepal isn’t currently getting too much attention that I think it should be getting, probably because of less global media marketing/advertising efforts by the government. Though our government is lacking behind in such work, private sector have done some major works in promoting tourism. The direct contribution of Travel & Tourism to GDP in 2014 was NPR 83.7bn (4.3% of GDP). This is forecast to rise by 5.4% to NPR 88.2bn in 2015. (WTTC, 2015)
No country is perfect in every way and Nepal is no exception either. So there are also some bad and ugly things going on our country. Like I mentioned above government of Nepal is lacking behind in most of the fields that a developing country needs to follow to compete with developed ones. ‘In 1996 february, Maoists who opposed the Himalayan country's constitutional monarchy, launched a "people's war" to establish a single-party communist republic and in Feb 2005, King Gyanendra took absolute power vowing to crush the Maoists. In Maoist rebels announced a unilateral ceasefire but the royalist government rejected it.In november 2005, Maoists joined a loose alliance with the seven main political parties to end royal rule.In January 2006, Rebels end the ceasefire.’ (Al Jazeera, 2008) Due to this 10 year long, our economic totally got screwed lacking 10 years behind others and is still recovering probably due to lack of interest among the so-called Leaders of the country which is the most unfortunate fate what we Nepalese are suffering from. The estimated GDP per capita of Nepal in 2017 is $2606.1 (GFMAG, 2017).This figure explains the condition of our economy right now.
Right after the civil war ended, our people with various beliefs and traditions are trying to adapt the so called modern method of living. In the dream of living that modern life, many youngsters (the main working population) of our country are flowing abroad. Due to this Brain Drain situation, our country is lacking in innovation, there are less new industries being developed. If this continues on we will be like parasites living dependent life on others. A total of 2,723,587 labour permits were issued by the Department of Labour and Employment from 2008/09 through 2014/15 (ilo, 2014). This explains the present ugly condition of we nepali are going through right now.
Thus, despite the huge opportunities provided by our mother nature, we are disregarding it and trying to copy/follow someone who are just too busy thinking only about themselves and no-one else. ‘Janani janmavumischa swargadapi garaayasi ’, which means mother and motherland are greater than heaven. This phrase truly explains what we should believe, how our thinking should be and how we should continue living our life.
